Topic: Living Abroad

Guest Speaker: Alistair Cameron

Father (Alistair) & Son (David) share and reflect on their experiences of living and working in the middle-east in the early 1990s.

What motivated Alistair to take his young family abroad? What did he realise once they got there, and what did his children think?

Background

In November 1990, Alistair "upped sticks" and moved his young family to the Sultanate of Oman on the Persian Gulf for a 3-year posting. Six years later, this family returned to the North-East of Scotland, their lives changed immeasurably in very different ways.

What things did Alistair consider when committing to such a bold decision during a contentious period in the middle-east at that time?

What was life like for a child in an oil-sponsored school, and how did 6 years in a foreign culture shape their perspective on life?

Alistair and David will reflect on all this and open up our discussion on the benefits and costs of living abroad, as well as who it might suit most.
